Business numbers for 2FA, OTP and account signups

The Enterprise eSIM team 6 min readUpdated 11 August 2026

Work OTPs, 2FA codes and account-signup texts should arrive on a number the company owns, not on an employee’s personal phone. A per-person work eSIM line gives each team member a real UK number for work verifications — so when they leave, the number (and every account tied to it) stays with the business.

This is one of the strongest reasons to give each employee a proper work number. The moment a verification text goes to someone’s private mobile, that account is quietly anchored to a number you don’t control.

Why personal numbers for work 2FA are a problem

When staff use their personal phone to sign up for work tools, receive OTPs, or set up two-factor authentication, the business ends up depending on numbers it doesn’t own. That creates real exposure:

  • Lock-out when they leave. The recovery codes and 2FA prompts for a work account go to a number that walked out the door. Regaining access can mean support tickets, downtime, or losing the account.
  • No oversight. IT can’t see or manage verification that lands on private devices.
  • Personal risk for staff. Employees don’t want their private number bound to company accounts, spam and sales follow-ups.
  • Messy offboarding. Every account has to be hunted down and re-pointed to a new number one by one.

The fix: a company-owned line per person

Give each team member their own work number as an eSIM on their existing phone. Work signups, OTPs and 2FA go to that line. Because the company owns the number, the verification path is yours — see own your business numbers.

Continuity when staff leave

The whole point of ownership is continuity. When someone leaves, you don’t lose access to the accounts their number verified — you reassign the line.

  1. 1

Remove the line from their phone

Deactivate the work eSIM on the departing employee’s device.

  2. 2

    Reassign the number

In the portal at /app, assign the same number to their replacement, or hold it.

  3. 3

    Keep receiving codes

OTPs and 2FA prompts for accounts tied to that number now reach the new holder — no scramble to update every account at once.

The full offboarding flow is covered in offboard an employee’s phone number.

Real UK numbers actually receive the codes

Verification only works if the codes arrive. Enterprise eSIM lines are real UK mobile numbers on a real UK network (Vodafone UK), not virtual or VoIP numbers — which many services reject or block for OTPs. Because they’re genuine mobile lines, they receive standard SMS OTPs and 2FA codes like any other UK mobile.

Rolling it out

Provisioning is quick: order a line per person in the portal, they scan a QR code, and the work number is live in minutes beside their personal SIM. From then on, point work signups and 2FA at the work line. See give employees a work number for the rollout, or get started directly. Around £4.99 per line per month, one company bill.

Frequently asked questions

Can an eSIM number receive 2FA and OTP texts?

Yes. These are real UK mobile numbers on a real network, so they receive standard SMS OTP and 2FA codes like any other UK mobile.

Why not just use an employee’s personal number for work 2FA?

Because the business doesn’t own it. When the employee leaves, the accounts verified by that number can become locked or inaccessible. A company-owned line keeps verification with the business.

Will services accept these numbers, or reject them as virtual?

They’re genuine UK mobile numbers, not VoIP or virtual numbers, so they aren’t flagged the way many virtual numbers are for OTP delivery.

What happens to accounts verified by a number when staff leave?

You reassign the number to their replacement in the portal, so codes for those accounts keep arriving — no need to re-point every account at once.
