How to offboard an employee’s work number

The Enterprise eSIM team 5 min readUpdated 11 August 2026

Because your company owns each Enterprise eSIM line, offboarding a leaver is quick and clean: you reclaim the number in the portal, reassign it to whoever picks up their work, and revoke the leaver’s access — usually in a few minutes. The number, the customer history tied to it and any accounts or 2FA stay with the business, not the person walking out.

This is the payoff of company-owned lines. If the number had been the employee’s personal mobile, none of this would be possible — see why your company should own its phone numbers.

Before you start

  • Decide whether the number should be reassigned to another team member or reclaimed and parked for later.
  • If it’s being reassigned, know who the new owner is and their name/email.
  • Note any accounts or services with 2FA pointed at this number so you can confirm they keep working — see business numbers for 2FA.

Offboarding in the portal

  1. 1

    Open the leaver’s line

Sign in to the portal at get started, go to your team, and find the person who’s leaving. Each line shows its number, current owner and status.

  2. 2

    Reclaim the number

Choose to reclaim the line. This detaches it from the leaver’s device so the eSIM no longer works on their phone, while the number itself stays owned by the company.

  3. 3

    Reassign or park it

Assign the number to a new team member — they install it by QR on their own phone in minutes — or park it if no one needs it yet. The number and its history carry over intact.

  4. 4

    Confirm continuity

Because it’s a real mobile number, calls and texts to it keep landing, and SMS OTPs and 2FA codes still arrive. Verify any critical accounts are reachable on the reassigned line.

  5. 5

    Revoke access

Once the line is off the leaver’s device, their access to the work number is gone. Remove them from the team so they can no longer manage or view any lines.

What the business keeps

  • The number — it never leaves the company, so it’s ready to reassign.
  • Continuity — customers calling or texting the line still reach your business.
  • OTP and 2FA — accounts verified against the number stay reachable on the reassigned line.
  • Control — the leaver’s device loses the line the moment you reclaim it.

Doing this across a whole team

The same steps work whether you’re offboarding one person or restructuring a department. For planning larger changes — starters, movers and leavers together — see how to roll out work numbers. Enterprise eSIM is powered by eSIM Copilot and part of Mindszi.

Frequently asked questions

How long does offboarding a number take?

Usually a few minutes. You reclaim the line from the portal, reassign or park it, and remove the leaver’s access — no waiting on shipping or a provider.

Does the customer history survive when I reassign a number?

Yes. The number stays the same, so calls and texts from customers keep reaching it — the new owner simply picks up where the leaver left off.

Will accounts and 2FA linked to the number break?

No. It remains a real mobile number, so SMS OTPs and 2FA codes still arrive on the reassigned line. Confirm any critical accounts are reachable after handover.

Can the leaver still use the work number after they go?

No. Reclaiming the line detaches the eSIM from their device, so it stops working on their phone. Removing them from the team revokes any remaining access.
