BYOD done right: work numbers on personal phones

The Enterprise eSIM team 5 min readUpdated 11 August 2026

BYOD done right means giving each employee a separate work number on their own phone — not asking them to use their personal number for work, and not issuing a second handset. With an eSIM you add a work line that sits beside the SIM already in their phone (dual SIM), so work and personal stay cleanly separated on one device.

The work line is a real UK number the company owns. Calls, texts, account signups and 2FA for work go to it; personal life stays on their personal number. Nobody has to hand over a private mobile number, and nobody has to carry two phones.

The problem with most BYOD

Bring-your-own-device usually collapses into one of two bad options:

  • Use your personal number for work. Cheap, but the number belongs to the employee. When they leave, the contacts, WhatsApp Business chats, OTPs and account logins tied to it walk out the door with them.
  • Issue a company phone. Clean separation, but expensive to buy and manage, and most people resent carrying two devices — so adoption suffers.

A work eSIM line is the middle path: the separation of a company number with the convenience of one phone.

How a work line on a personal phone works

  1. 1

    Order the line

In the portal at /app, order a work number and send activation to the team member.

  2. 2

    Scan to activate

They scan a QR code (or tap a link). The work eSIM installs alongside their existing SIM — no reset, no new phone.

  3. 3

    Label the lines

On the phone, the personal SIM and work eSIM are labelled separately, so it’s obvious which number is in use.

  4. 4

    Use it for work

Work calls, texts and verifications run on the work number; personal life stays on the personal number.

Privacy: keeping work and personal apart

Because the work line is a distinct number, employees never expose their personal number to customers, suppliers or work accounts. That protects them after hours and after they move on. It also protects the business: the work identity — the number customers know, the logins and OTPs — belongs to the company, not the individual. See own your business numbers for why that matters.

When this approach fits

  • You want every team member reachable on a proper work number without buying phones.
  • Staff are comfortable running a work line on their own device (most are, since there’s no personal-data trade-off).
  • You want to keep control of work numbers as people join and leave — reassign in the portal, covered in give employees a work number.
  • Your team is distributed — see eSIM for remote teams.

Getting started

You can see the plan and provision your first lines in minutes. Roughly £4.99 per line per month, one company bill, real UK numbers on a real UK network. If you’re weighing this against buying handsets, read work number vs a second work phone.

Frequently asked questions

Does BYOD mean employees use their personal number for work?

Not with this approach. They get a separate company-owned work number as an eSIM on their own phone, so their personal number is never used for work.

Will installing a work eSIM affect their personal SIM?

No. The work eSIM installs alongside the existing SIM. The personal number, contacts and apps are untouched — the phone simply gains a second line.

Can employees keep the work line private from personal contacts?

Yes. The two numbers are distinct. They choose which line to call or text from, so work and personal contacts never mix.

What happens to the work number when someone leaves?

It stays with the company. You remove it from their phone and reassign it to the next person in the portal.
